Q: When I see a foreigner, how do I meet him or her?

Mark's Answer: You can always just go up and say "Hi". But be careful not to surprise him or her too much. I think its better to take things a little slowly, no need to rush, otherwise you may scare people. Give them a chance to see you and what you are doing. Also, meeting foreigners just to practice your English is a little like using them, which is not really friendly at all. I think it's better to think of them as real people with feelings, ideas, and a heart, and sincerely be friendly. Consider their cultural background as well. Making real friends and just getting a language partner are different things.

Notice that I said be friendly, you cannot force people to be your friends. It takes time and understanding. If you are lucky you may hit it off (hit it off means become real good friends), but that is not common. So try not to feel pressured, because that will make your potential new friend uncomfortable.

My best friends are people I have gotten to know slowly. They gave me a chance to get to know them and like them. I have met some Chinese people and become friends, mainly by hanging out with each other occasionally or seeing them at work or school.
